MAY 2019


WEDNESDAY – 01 MAY 2019 (07:30)

Midweek outing: AVONDALE FARM, Paarl

Take the N1 towards Paarl. Slip off the N1 at Exit 59 (Jan van Riebeeck). At the T-junction, turn Right towards Franschhoek. Follow the signs and turn Left into Lustigan Road – the first Road to the Left – and then turn Right into the estate. We meet at the security gate at 07:30.


THURSDAY – 16 MAY 2019 (19:30)

Speaker: John Fincham

Topic: Birds, Elephants & Lion and fun in 5 African countries!

 John started birding at school in Rhodesia. Peter Steyn has been a powerful mentor and friend of his for about 55 years. His talk will range over parts of Namibia, Botswana, Zambia and Zimbabwe. To him birds are a window to the whole environment. His talk is a fun adventure!

Outing: HELDERBERG FARM, Somerset West

Take the N2 to Somerset West, and turn onto the R44 travelling towards Stellenbosch. Travel for 4.5km on this R44, and turn right onto the Klein Helderbergpad Road. It is 1km along this road. Gates open at 08:00. There is an entrance fee payable. Remember your picnic goodies and refreshments.

We meet at Tygervalley centre at 07:30 to arrange shared lifts. If you are going directly to Diemersfontein please let Helene know. Wait for the group outside the security gates to the Estate at about 8h15.


THURSDAY – 20 JUNE 2019 (19:30)

Speaker: Otto Schmidt

Topic: “Summer Birding to Botswana & the Caprivi”

In early December 2018 Sandy and Otto joined a 17 day birding tour to N. Botswana and the Eastern Caprivi.  They hoped to add a few of the area specials which they had missed on previous trips. Weather conditions were pretty extreme, but they visited many excellent birding spots, saw a great many good birds, and missed some others!

From Blaauwberg Road (M14) turn either into Janssens Ave. or Pentz Drive and follow the signs to the entrance of the Table Bay Nature Reserve. Fee payable for vehicle (R24) and per person(R16). Bring coffee & eats. We meet at the education centre at 08:00. Please share lifts.

CWAC – BOT RIVER LAGOON

We encourage members to take part in this Important Bird Area (IBA) waterbird count. Please contact Kevin to be assigned to a team. This is our flagship count, and data has been obtained at these bi-annual counts for the past 26 years.


THURSDAY – 18 JULY 2019 (19:30)

Topic: When Emperors and Kings are related to Africans – The Penguins!!

Tony is showing lovely pictures of the 19 penguin species, and how ‘our penguin’ is related to the other species. He is highlighting what sets penguins apart from other birds, the threats they face and conservation of the species. Also find out why ‘Kings and Emperors’ always take their eggs for a walk.


SATURDAY – 20 JULY 2019 (08:00)

Outing: Rondevlei Nature Reserve

This reserve is part of the False Bay Ecology Park, and is situated at the Cnr of Perth Road and Fisherman’s Walk, Grassy Park. Entrance is R14,00 per person. If you take the M5, turn left at the BP garage, at 8th Avenue. A few streets along, turn Right into Perth Road. Follow this to the reserve at the end of the road. Check further details with Brian.

CAR COUNTS – Swartland Routes

Blue cranes and Raptors are counted, on three or more routes in the Swartland. Helene, Lesley and Kevin also lead teams.


CAMP – 13 to 15 SEPTEMBER 2019

Traveller’s Rest, Clanwilliam

This is a rustic farm, with many cottages – situated over the Pakhuis Pass in rural Clanwilliam. Cost per person sharing is between R500 to R650 per person sharing for the weekend. Bookings with Brigid (082 5700 808). Spring time on a farm – promises to be great. Members only.
