THURSDAY – 17 MAY 2018 (19:30)

Speaker: Dale Wright

Topic: “Protecting habitats, protecting species, protecting your hobby!”

Dale is the Regional Conservation Manager, Western Cape – for Birdlife South Africa. He will be giving us insight into the wonderful work being done with the IBA (Important Bird Areas) projects. He will also touch on the great work being done by citizen scientists i.e. many of the TBC Bird Club members. His talks are always very interesting.

Outing: Restanworld, Grabouw

This farm is the home of Jessie Walton, who has built a hide on one of the dams to view crakes and waterbirds. Follow the N2 past Grabouw and just after the Peregrine Farm Stall, turn Right onto the road signposted “Viljoenshoop”. Continue for 5km and turn left onto the “Highlands” Road. Proceed along for 3km to where we meet on the right at Farm 65.

We meet outside in the restaurant parking area at 08:30. Please proceed through the security gate, and meet in the car park.

THURSDAY - 21 JUNE 2018 (19:30)

Speaker: David Hall

Topic: “Wonderful Wilderness & surrounds!”

David travels extensively and says that one of his favourite areas to bird - is the Wilderness area. Come and enjoy his travels through Wilderness and the surrounding areas. Not to be missed.

SATURDAY – 23 JUNE 2018 (08:00)

Outing: Karoo Desert Botanical Gardens, Worcester

Take the N1 to Worcester. Pass the Ultra City after which you turn left at the 3rd or 4th robot (Roux Road). Follow signs to “Karootuin”. We meet in the parking area. Entrance fee payable. The gardens are always a popular venue. A nice variety of birds are found here. Wear warm clothing, and good hiking shoes. Bring snacks & drinks for a full day out.

We meet at the Durbanville Municipality at 08:00 (outside the gates in Oxford Street) – to arrange shared transport. Come and enjoy the waterbird count.

We encourage members to take part in this Important Bird Area (IBA) waterbird count. Please contact Mariana to be assigned to a team. This is our flagship count, and data has been obtained at these bi-annual counts for the past 25 years.

Topic: “Tenants, not Owners (of Weaver nests)!

Weavers are well known for their intricately woven nests. Many other species benefit from these nests, and use them for breeding or shelter. This talk will explore the fascinating stories of some birds and animals that make use of weaver nests.
